So with the bowling club being located in a very popular tourist area and only a five minutes walk from town the seating around the green makes for a very pleasant place to spend an afternoon or evening enjoying bowls most days in the summer. If you wish to come down to play while you're in the area or a local wishing to try the sport out, Please contact the club by email or phone to arrange for a member to meet and greet you.
Green fees will apply to visitors, and a taster session with a member will be arranged for potential new members.
Fitz Park was opened in 1882 and although it is assumed that two bowling greens were then laid there is no documentary evidence of this. There used to be two separate bowling clubs in the park – Greta Side and Fitz Park No.1, both being admitted to the then Cumberland Bowling Association in 1930. In 1972, because of dwindling membership, the two clubs joined and Fitz Park Bowling Club was formed. The Greta Side green is the original green and is now a public green.
The club boasts one of the finest, if not the finest, greens in the county and hosts many county competitions and matches, this is thanks to an enormous amount of hard work from the members which is ongoing. Sadly the clubhouse was badly flooded in 2005, 2007 and 2015 but on all these occasions, the resilient spirit of the club's members ensured that the clubhouse was fully repaired and restored. The club currently participates in four leagues – the West Cumbria Men's Fours League, The Eden Valley Mixed Fours League, the Eden Valley Ladies Triples League and the Eden Valley Mixed Triples League – and has many internal competitions, friendly matches with both other cumbrian clubs and touring teams, and though the needs of non-competitive bowlers are also well provided for.
Keith Price, President
The club is situated in the beautiful surroundings of Upper Fitz Park in Keswick, which itself is located amidst some of the most magnificent scenery in the English Lake District
